Opening Ceremony of DPP Program (the 8th Intake) – 2019-2020

Successful Opening Ceremony of the 8th intake of the Executive Master in Development Policies and Practice.

On the 29th of July 2019 at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel the Opening Ceremony of the eight intake of the Executive Master in Development Policies and Practice was successfully organized.

The ceremony with presence of H.E. Kyaw Soe Win – Ambassador, Myanmar Embassy in Vietnam, Dr. Fredric William Swierczek – Director of Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen Huong Thuy Phan – the regional academic coordinator of the DPP Program, Mr. Pablo Rahul Das – the Representative of the Swiss Embassy in Vietnam, DPP lecturers and new participants, distinguished guests and alumni and AIT-VN staff.

The DPP is an international Executive Master program jointly organized by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) and the Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AITVN). The program is designed for professionals at mid-career to senior career level, who hold or aspire to leadership positions in governments, international organizations and NGOs, as well as those in private sector seeking relevant skills and exposure in the Greater Mekong countries (mainly Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam). DPP is supported by the Canton of Geneva, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and other institutions. Since 2003 the program has trained more than 300 development professionals coming mainly from Asia, Africa, and Latin America but also from Switzerland and other ‘Northern’ countries.

The DPP program seeks to contribute to sustainable and effective development actions those are equitable and respectful of cultural and social diversity. It aims at strengthening public, associative and private institutions active in local and regional development, by reinforcing the competencies of their staff.

“This year the DPP runs in 5 regions: in Bishkek, Accra, Lima, Ouagadougou and Hanoi. We have enrolled 70 participants coming from 35 countries”- mentioned Dr. Phan in her opening remark. Also for new DPP students, as a long-year experienced advisor, she gave many useful guidelines and information and encouraged them to learn the most during the first module of DPP in Hanoi.

Continued the Opening Ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Tung – an Alumnus of DPP 2016-2017 – shared his experiences and unforgettable memories with all the students of this year. For him the most challenging module is the second module when students come back to their work office and at the same time collect data to write their thesis and complete an e-learning on Gender. This short period of the “student life” is not easy, but it is a good chance for the participants to discover their limitation.

The students of this year come from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar (6). They all, regardless of age and territories, public or private sectors come to the DPP program with a desire to “learn” more and more, like Henry Ford said: “Anyone who stop learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young”. So the “students” will stay young with the program in the years to come. Mr. Kim Sambath, on behalf of the new group of students promised to be committed to successfully completion of the program and apply what they will have obtained in their work after the completion of the DPP.

The opening ceremony was followed with the group photo session and closed with warmly welcome party.
