Training workshop on “Climate change and its impact on the environment and agricultural production in the Mekong Delta”

The Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AITVN) and An Giang University (AGU) have successfully conducted a workshop on “Climate change and Its Impacts on the Environment and Agricultural Production in the Mekong Delta”. This is a training workshop aiming at improving the knowledge on climate change and its impact on the environment and agricultural production, as well as climate change adaptation solutions for local communities.

Participants appreciated the usefulness and applicability of the papers presented at the workshop followed by active discussions and exchanging experiences. There were more than 60 delegates, coming from the An Giang University, the Institute for Climate Change Research (DRAGON – Mekong), departments and agencies in An Giang Province and Institutes – Universities of Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho, and AITVN .

In addition, participants had the opportunity to learn from experience sharing models of agricultural production, economical and efficient use of water, aquaculture and environmental management in response to climate change. Thematic areas include: (i) Utilization of reservoirs and renewable energy development; (ii) Research on water balance in agricultural production; and (iii) sustainable agriculture development solutions for shrimp-paddy in the Mekong Delta towards Climate Change Adaptation – An Giang Province to help identify the challenges / opportunities of the province, to forecast the situation and prepare for future climate change. Overall evaluation score of the workshop is 8.8 (scale of 10).
