Successful training course on “Biodiversity Impact Assessment”, in Hanoi, Vietnam

The training course on “Biodiversity Impact Assessment” has been successfully organized by Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AIT-VN) in Hanoi, Vietnam during 12 – 15 March 2019. This is one of training topics in relation to Environmental and Social Sustainability organized by the Vietnam Learning Center on Environmental and Social Sustainability (LC), AIT-VN.

Most of the course’s participants are environmental specialist working for Consulting firms in Myanmar and Vietnam such as E Guard Environmental Services Co., Ltd and Sustainable Environment Myanmar Co., Ltd.

The course’s content covered: (i) Why BIA is important. (ii) Introduction of Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) and Sourcebook (iii) Legal Framework for BIA in Vietnam (iv) World Bank and ADB Safeguards Policies for Biodiversity (v) Important Concepts and Terminology (vi) Overview of the BIA Guidelines (vii) how to use the BIA Technical Guidelines (viii) Tools of BIA in the Field.

During the four– day training, participants have one – day field visit to Tam Dao National Park. Participants had chance to visit the construction site and meet with the environmental staff to understand more about the biodiversity of the national park and typically the biodiversity impacts of the cable car  project through the park.

Participants highly evaluated the course, especially its usefulness and practical application in participant’s reality work. Most of the participants expressed that the knowledge and skills they have learnt from this training course could be used in their work right after the training course such as Biodiversity guideline, Screening and scoping, how to access impact upon biodiversity, Biodiversity Baseline, Impact prediction and assessment as well as Biodiversity offsetting, etc. The overall score representing the participants’ satisfaction was 8.0 (over the scale of 10).
