The Opening Ceremony of the first intake of the Professional Master in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Applications (PMDS) in Vietnam was successfully organized on Saturday morning, the 7th of August, 2021.
The Master Program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has been recently developed by the School of Engineering and Technology, AIT to meet the increasing demand for data scientists and AI professionals in the region. The program has been implemented for more than two years and has now brought to Vietnam a form of a Professional Master Program which is designed for working professionals with a background in ICT who would like to extend their skillset to encompass data science. The program is initially designed for the Vietnamese professional market and will be extended to other countries.
Participated in the ceremony were Dr. Phung Van Dong, Director of AIT Vietnam; Prof. Dieter Trau, Dean of School of Engineering and Technology (SET); Dr. Chutiporn Anutariya, Head of ICT Department; Prof. Matthew N. Dailey, PMDS Program Coordinator, Director of AIT AI Center; Prof. Phan Minh Dung and other PMDS Faculty: Dr. Agus Harianto, Coordinator, AIT Helpdesk; AIT Vietnam staff and all PMDS students. 
At the beginning, Dr. Dong gave a brief overview of AIT Vietnam. After that was the remark of Prof. Dieter Trau – Dean of SET, and then followed by a presentation about the PMDS program and PMDS faculty delivered by Dr. Chutiporn Anutariya – Head of ICT department. “Getting to Know You” is an interesting part where students had a chance to introduce about themselves and share the reason why they choose PMDS program and their expectations from the program. The first batch of PMDS program has enrolled 16 students who are now senior managers, IT officers and data analysts working in different industries such as telecommunication, energy, finance and banking, auditing consulting firm, and academia. After the “Getting to Know You” session, Prof. Matthew N. Dailey presented important information about the program structure, academic requirements, foundation knowledge that students need to prepare before commencing the program and computer setup. Also, in order to help the students be well prepared for the online classes during covid-19 pandemic period and use AIT services the best, Dr. Harianto, the IT Coordinator from the AIT Helpdesk shared all information related to these issues.
Studying during working, while still have to take care of families at the same time is really a big challenge for those bravely choose PMDS program at AIT. Understanding thoroughly and experienced about that, Dr. Dong, the AIT Vietnam Director and Prof. Phan Minh Dung – one of seven AIT faculty researchers who are among world’s top 2% reseach community – had interesting experience sharing sessions with the new students. Some questions and concerned raised by students and then the opening and orientation ceremony of the first intake of PMDS was closed by a group photo.
The first course of the PMDS – Computer Programming for Data Science – will start on the 13th of August, 2021.
