Digital Transformation and Smart Universities

On June 3, 2020, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed Decision 749 approving the “National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with orientation to 2030”. With a vision to 2030, Vietnam becomes a digital, stable and prosperous country, pioneering in testing new technologies and models. The 4.0 technology revolution has created an explosion of new economic models enabled by technology, which urgently requires human resources to adapt to Industry 4.0. Therefore, universities must quickly transform to train human resources to meet the above requirements. That is the transition from the traditional school model to the smart school.

To catch up with the breath of Industry 4.0, the Asian Institute of Technology in Vietnam (AITVN) cooperated with Van Lang University and the Vietnam Institute of Artificial Intelligence to successfully organize the seminar “Digital Transformation and Smart University” for nearly 400 lecturers and researchers from different disciplines of Van Lang University (VLU). The speakers are leading experts on digital transformation and smart cities, Dr. Phung Van Dong – Director of AITVN, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hoai – Director of Vietnam Institute of Artificial Intelligence. This is one of the training and consulting activities on digital transformation, smart cities, and smart universities that AITVN and its partners are about to deploy in the near future. The main purpose of the workshop is to answer the question of how digital transformation affects the transformation process and building a smart university model, the roadmap and conditions for digital transformation to build a smart university. to meet the needs of Industry 4.0 and the digital economy.

At the seminar, experts shared basic knowledge about digital transformation, opportunities and challenges and some typical examples. The workshop also introduced the smart city model and smart university, and the ongoing practical experiences. Digital transformation and smart city always go hand in hand with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and so these are also topics discussed in the conference. Training high-quality human resources to serve the national digital transformation program and smart city is a very urgent need in the coming years. Here, experts affirmed that “all of us, whether we like it or not, are still living and will live with AI, AI is present in all aspects of economic, social, political and cultural life”. Understanding AI, conditions and roadmap to apply AI, difficulties when applying AI to be able to successfully transform from a traditional university to a smart university model. However, Dr. Phung Van Dong emphasized that “Digital transformation is a Process, not a destination and therefore it requires continuous innovation”, it is not merely a Technology issue, but also a People issue. Here, the commitment and determination of the head of an organization, enterprise or university plays a decisive role in the success or failure of digital transformation.

The workshop closed but left behind many questions such as how to apply AI in teaching and learning to improve teaching efficiency and quality? What are the specific steps of the transition to Smart University? How to bring AI into each specific discipline? And similar questions for Smart Cities, Smart Cities, Smart Economy, Smart Government or Digital Government… Those are also topics that will be covered in more depth in the seminars. upcoming events organized by AITVN and strategic partners.
