Competency Enhancement on ESIA in the Region

Following the successful organization of rollout courses on ESIA which were offered by the Learning Center to participants from regional countries in 2016 and 2017, the LC continued its initiative and conducted another ESIA course from 7 to 9 September, 2017 at AITVN premise in Hanoi.

The overall objective of the training course is to build capacity for PMUs/ executors and consultants on preparation, supervision and management of the Environmental and social impact assessment/Environmental Management Plan (ESIA/EMP) more effectively and to meet the requirements of the World Bank’s, the Asian Development Bank’s and Vietnam’s principles and standards.

With these meaningful objectives, the training program attracted the participants not only from Vietnam but also from different countries in the region, including Myanmar, Nepal and South Korea. They are from different organizations and have different background education, but only one mutual interest in obtaining a better understanding of the safeguards policies and practices in ESIA.

The course was facilitated by a competent training team who encouraged the participants to actively raise and discuss issues or problems they face in the ESIA process at work; share ideas and find solutions for these issues. The participatory learning approach and active learning methods were applied in all training activities at the very beginning to the end of the program which worked very well and greatly contributed to the satisfaction of the class members.

Generally, the attractive course design and structure, interactive learning approach, active involvement of participants and professionalism and enthusiasm of the training team contributed to the great success of the training program.

In respond to the needs of the environmental practitioners in the region, in September the LC will organize the following courses: i) Principles of EIA Review (18-21 September, 2017); ii) Involuntary Resettlement (25-27 September, 2017); and ii) Effective Environmental Management during Construction (tentatively 25-27 September, 2017) and other ESIA and Safeguards Courses in November and December, 2017.
