AIT-VN participate in International Conference on Sustainable Lifestyle and Education in Asia

Hanoi, January 18-19th 2018, Dr. Frederic Swierzek – Director of AIT-VN and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich Hoa – Deputy Director of AIT-VN/Manager of Green Office project participated in the international conference “Taking actions towards Sustainable Lifestyle and Education in Asia” in the framework of 10 Year Framework Programme on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). This is a forum for policy makers, experts on practices and priorities to mainstream sustainable lifestyle.

The conference was to achieve mutual understanding on sustainable lifestyle through multidisciplinary approach. According to this, all aspects of consumption behavior are taken into consideration to affect decision-making in consumption, integrate principles and practices of sustainable lifestyle into all areas of society, develop tools to encourage and improve capacity to achieve sustainable lifestyle, as well as, implement education and awareness raising on sustainable lifestyle.

At the conference, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich Hoa – Deputy Director of AIT-VN/Manager of Green Office project had a presentation on the GO initiative, its innovative approach and methodology.

During discussion session on SLE, Dr. Frederic introduced AIT-VN’s contribution to promoting sustainable lifestyle in Vietnam, including the GetGreen Vietnam Project, AIT NEXT Community Education Project and Global Next Program – Green Pioneer.

Participating in the conference were other initiatives supported by the 10YFP in Asia:

  • “Enhance food waste managment through educating youth and community at schools” (Malaysia);
  • “Sustainable Consumption and Recycle in paper production and textile to reduce impacts on urban climate” (India & Bangladesh); and
  • “New approach in GHG reduction through promoting lifestyle towards electricity and water saving in households in Da Nang, Vietnam” (Vietnam).

In Vietnam, there are many policies and frameworks to support sustainable consumption and production, especially National Strategy on Green Growth, National Action Plan on SCP, Strategy on Environmental Protection vision 2010 and direction 2020, Sustainable Development Strategy phase 2011-2020, National action plan to implement Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development… and other policies.

However, in practice, education and practice of sustainable living in Vietnam has many weaknesses such as incomplete policy system to promote SCP, backward production technology, waste of natural resources, polluted habitat, habits and practices of low productivity, low quality products and services, and so on. Consequently, taking actions towards sustainable education and lifestyles in Vietnam and Asia, as well as globally, is a necessity.
