Professional Master's Program in Urban Management (PM-UM) is collaboration between Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) - through Urban AIT Vietnam (AITVN) and Environmental Management Field of Study (UEM-FoS) - and Post Graduate Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture (HCMUARC) to launch this Program. 
 
The PM-UM Program aims to promote sustainable development by drawing on and integrating theories and perspectives from the disciplines of urban planning; urban and regional development; economic development; and public policy and management into a distinctive framework of problems issues and questions concerning the urban environment in a developing country/city context. Especially, as urban management in Vietnam is challenging with several critical issues in the current context of rapid urbanization and industrialization, this program will be very useful to produce more professional urban managers.


Entry requirements and Procedure

To be eligible for admission to the professional master's program, an applicant must:
• hold a bachelor degree in an appropriate field of study acceptable to AIT and HCMUARC
• have undergraduate grades significantly above average,
• have at least three years of relevant work experience,
• be in satisfactory physical and mental health,
• satisfy English requirements by AIT.

To apply for admission, an applicant must submit the following documents to AIT:

• A completed AIT application form,
• A certified copy of undergraduate certificate (in English),
• A certified official student transcript (in English),
• A certificate of English language proficiency.

Curriculum

Considering the great variability of the student’s education background and the roles of respective organizations, students are given greater flexibility to choose courses according to their own interests. During a period of 12 months, the program is divided into three semesters:

Semester 1: 12 Credits

Course work at HCMUARC: Students are required to complete 12-15 credits from the following courses.
• Management of Urban Housing, Infrastructure and Services
• Urban Economics and Finance
• Urban Environmental Management System
• Urbanization and Environmental Policy
• Land Resource Management
• Disaster Management in Urban Planning
• Transportation Planning and Urban Mass Transport

Semester 2: 12 credits

Course work at HCMUARC: Students continue to take the remaining courses to complete the total required credits of 24.
• Urban Planning and the Built-Environment
• Governance and Urban Management
• Urban Infrastructure Assessment Techniques
• Strategic Environmental Assessment for Urban Development
• Environmental Science and Technology for Decision Makers
• Gender Equality in Urban Management
• Sustainable Infrastructure Development in the Context of Climate Change

Semester 3: 9 credits

Project work at AIT and field work in Thailand: Students are requested to stay in AIT at least two months in order to do (a) a six-credit project work and (b) a three-credit special topic with fieldwork report.

The tuition fee of 13,970 USD is for course works, special study and research projects (including training materials). This is the AIT standard tuition (350USD/credit and 500 USD as registration fee) and fee for the Professional master program with 33 credits. The registration fee must be paid at the admission time while the tuition fee can be paid in full before the start of the program or by installments as before each semester. The students are responsible for their living expenses throughout the program.
Fee for International trip can be estimated to the total amount of 1,900 USD (including accomodation, airticket, personal expenses).
Note: Fee for international field trip is counted on actual expenses and subject to change in notice.

English requirement

AIT is an international institute with English as the sole language of instruction. Admission to AIT requires proof of English language proficiency which may be satisfied in any of the following
1. IELTS (4.5)
2. TOEFL (Paper -based: 500; Computer - Based: 173; or Internet - based: 61)
3. AITEIT (4.5). Applicants can apply for English Test offered by AIT at AIT-VN. English Test fee: 20 USD.
AIT-VN will support for those who need more English and Academic Skills before joining the program. AIT-VN will provide consultation and advise candidates to take AITEIT test and conduct the test on request.

The program is conducted in one year. To complete the master program, participants need to complete 11 courses and 1 project report with total 33 credits.
In the first two semesters, students will take basic and advanced courses selected in consultation with an academic/thesis advisor from among the regular courses offered at AIT. During the third semester, students will carry out their project study. Students will conduct an international trip of Project work at AIT and field work in Thailand or other countries outside Vietnam.
